WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Emergency Management officials are urging residents across the state to be vigilant for possible flash flooding Wednesday night into Thursday as the remnants of Hurricane Beryl pass over.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for all counties except Bennington and Windham. A tornado watch has been issued for parts of New York and Vermont until 9 p.m.
Residents in Barre and Montpellier were out Wednesday filling sandbags, trying to stave off a potential repeat of last year’s devastation. While the storm is not expected to be anything like the July 2023 storm, officials say it still poses real dangers.
The State Emergency Operations Center has opened in Waterbury and officials are monitoring conditions. Urban search and rescue teams and the Vermont National Guard are also staging. The Guard says about 15 soldiers will stage high-water vehicles around the state at the fire stations in Greensboro, Berlin, Waterbury, Underhill, Lyndonville, and Vergennes.
