BERLIN, Vt. (WCAX) – The aftermath of a major weather event like flooding raises many health concerns, both physical and mental.
Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Mark Levine reminds people that stress and uncertainty after flooding can take a toll on your mental health. He urges those feeling overwhelmed to reach out to the SAMHSA Disaster Distress Helpline by calling or texting 1-800-985-5990 for free, confidential crisis counseling available 24/7, on all days of the year.
He also reminds Vermonters to avoid swimming in any body of water that could have been affected by flood waters, saying dangerous debris could appear– even days later– or the water could be contaminated.
“Not the news you want to hear prior to an anticipated very hot weekend. But certainly swimming in contaminated after a flood can result in serious safety risks or problems frpm infection. So it’s best to consider another summer activity,” Levine said.
The Health Department is offering free drinking water test kits for those not on municipal water systems. People can order a kit that tests for bacteria by visiting HealthVermont.gov/Flood, calling 802-338-4724 or 800-660-9997, or by contacting their local health office.
