BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The first leg of Burlington’s Champlain Parkway is set to open this summer, after decades in the making.
The project is part of an effort to funnel traffic from Interstate 189 to Burlington’s downtown.
The first section creating a new road in the South End of the city from Lakeside Avenue to Home Avenue has been paved since last year but has yet to open.
The Public Works Department says that’s due to work on traffic lights, road markings and the Pine Street Project.
“The new section of the Champlain Parkway is also been used as a staging area for the work that’s currently underway on Pine Street. So, there’s a lot of shuffling of resources and materials that we need to get to a place that’s safe. And we open it in a very methodical way to make sure that the community understands it and is ready to use it,” Burlington Public Works Director Chapin Spencer said.
Public Works says news will be coming out soon on the exact dates for opening.
