Cross built to memorialize migrants moved to Champlain, N.Y.

CHAMPLAIN, N.Y. (WCAX) – A cross built to honor migrants who died has been moved to the town of Champlain, New York.

It was made in memory of Ana Karen Vasquez-Flores, who was a Mexican migrant woman, and two men from Senegal who froze to death while trying to cross into Canada last winter.

Flores, who was pregnant at the time, drowned in the Great Chazy River in late December after illegally crossing into the United States to reunite with her husband.

“Her family asked me to share this message to all of you, Thank you for praising her name so high. We will never forget your kindness. Bless you all,” said Champlain Village Mayor Janet McFetridge.

The artist has created more than 1,600 crosses across the United States at sites where migrants have died. Flores’ cross is the first along the northern border.
