RI man injured in Vt. officer-involved shooting faces attempted murder charge

BURKE, Vt. (WCAX) – A Rhode Island man who was critically injured in an officer-involved shooting in Vermont faces more than a dozen charges, including attempted aggravated murder.

Brendan Sackal, 30, remains hospitalized in critical condition after a shootout with troopers in Burke on Sunday.

Police say he fired multiple rounds at them after crashing his truck during a pursuit, and two troopers returned fire, hitting him.

In addition to attempted aggravated murder, Sackal faces charges including aggravated assault, attempting to elude law enforcement and grossly negligent operation of a vehicle.

He could receive a mandatory life sentence without parole if convicted.
