CONCORD, N.H. (WCAX) – New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu signed three controversial bills regarding transgender youth into law, and vetoed a fourth.
He signed HB 619, which bans minors from getting gender-reassignment surgery, and HB 1205, which requires schools to designate athletics by sex and prohibits those assigned male at birth from participating in girls’ athletics.
He also passed HB 1312, which requires schools to notify parents of any potential discussions of human sexual education, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or gender expression, and allow them to opt-out.
The bill he vetoed is HB 396, which would have outlawed discrimination based on age, sex, gender identity, race, creed, color, marital status, familial status, physical or mental disability, or national origin.
New Hampshire Senate Democratic Leader Donna Soucy said in a statement regarding the bills, quote, “The Senate Democrats know that our transgender community members are not a threat, they are the threatened, and we will not silently stand by while they are targeted with cruel legislation.”
