WATCH LIVE: Gov. Scott, state officials to give update on flood response

BERLIN, Vt. (WCAX) – Gov. Phil Scott and state officials will give a news briefing on Friday on the state’s ongoing response to the flooding in Vermont communities. It’s scheduled to start at noon.

When it begins, you can watch it live in the player above or click here for a direct link.

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl swept into our region last week, prompting evacuations, knocking out roads and bridges, and leading to the deaths of two men.

The flooding caused widespread damage. In a briefing on Tuesday, state officials continued to urge flooding victims to document their damage, keep receipts for money spent on repairs and to report all flood damage to 211. Officials say reporting the damage helps them get an accurate tally of monetary damage in the state that could trigger federal assistance, which will help everyone.

Friday, the governor warned that Vermonters still have a lot of work ahead of them to recover from this latest round of flooding, and he urged people to help their neighbors with cleanup.

“Check on your neighbors, help muck out their basement, move some debris or offer to pick up supplies,” Scott, R-Vermont, said Tuesday. “Even a few hours can make a big difference for someone who has been at it a while, especially in this heat.”

If you need help cleaning up, call 211 to get directed to Crisis Cleanup or go to CrisisCleanup.org.

Vt. Natural Resources Secretary Julie Moore at the Tuesday briefing talked about calls for dredging. She said while dredging is an important river management tool, it comes with significant risk. She said dredging will not solve flooding but may provide alleviation in some circumstances. But she warned that you must think about the whole river system because dredging your property could be harmful to neighbors downstream.
