Local leaders react to President Biden bowing out of the 2024 presidential race

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Politicians and leaders in our region are reacting to President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will be bowing out of the 2024 presidential race.

“Today, Joe Biden made a difficult and selfless choice. He put our democracy and the future of our nation ahead of himself. For this, and for all he has done, Joe Biden will be remembered as one of the greatest presidents of our time… I am confident in our ability to beat Donald Trump. Our party has many capable, proven leaders — Vice President Harris among them. We have a deep bench of leaders who will carry on the Biden legacy and inspire the voters we need to deliver the White House,” said U.S. Senator Peter Welch.

President Biden is the most progressive and effective President of our lifetime, and he has my immense gratitude and respect. Today, President Biden cemented his legacy as a true patriot and a man of deep integrity. Now it’s time for all of us to get to work and secure Kamala Harris in the White House,” said U.S. Representative Becca Balint.

“I am profoundly grateful to President Biden for all that he has done for our country and will continue to do for the remainder of his term.”The task before us now is to focus on defeating Donald Trump in November, and I am committed to continuing that work. Our American democracy needs to remain strong and vibrant to deliver real results for the people of America, just as Joe Biden has done,” said U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan.

“In 2020, he ran for President because he knew he could defeat Donald Trump and save our democracy from another disastrous and devastating four years of far-right extremism. Today, with his decision to not seek reelection in 2024, he has once again put the party and country first. We are eternally grateful for his decades of service and for taking on the fight to restore the soul of our nation,” said U.S. Representative Annie Kuster.

Kuster has also thrown her support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, who President Biden has endorsed in his place.

Politicians on the other side of the aisle are using the moment to not only endorse Former President Trump, but to also call into question President Biden’s ability to carry out the remainder of his current term.

“If Joe Biden can’t run for re-election, he is unable and unfit to serve as President of the United States. He must immediately resign. The Democrat Party is in absolute free fall for their blatantly corrupt and desperate attempt to cover up the fact that Joe Biden is unfit for office. Every elected Democrat in America owns Joe Biden’s failed and feckless record causing the border crisis, Bidenflation, and chaos and weakness around the world. President Trump will win this November to save America,” said U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik.
