Vt. man pleads not guilty to kidnapping, assault charges in alleged crime spree

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Vermont man on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to nine charges including kidnapping and aggravated assault after an alleged crime spree in South Burlington.

While responding to a disturbance call on Monday, police say they were told a man later identified as Shannon Edwards, 39, of Montpelier, had threatened people with a knife near the woods by the Tesla dealership in South Burlington.

While police searched for him, they say Edwards stole a Champlain Water District truck and ended up in a nearby neighborhood on Brewer Parkway. Officers say Edwards then went into a home there and held a woman at knifepoint.

Officers say they were able to disarm Edwards and arrest him.

Police say the homeowner and two officers were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Edwards appeared in court virtually Tuesday morning from his hospital bed.

He had been released on furlough stemming from a previous conviction and was wanted by police, accused of a stabbing earlier this summer at a Vermont park and ride.

He pleaded not guilty to the new charges and will be held without bail.
