BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – If she gets the official party nomination, Kamala Harris will be only the second woman selected to run for the country’s highest office, but when it comes to women on the ballot for office in Vermont, the numbers have skyrocketed in the last few years.
Since Emerge Vermont launched in 2013 with support from former Governor Madeleine Kunin, the group has recruited and trained more than 200 women to run for political office. Politico this month ran an article titled “Women rule in Vermont.” In fact, they note that women could be just short of a majority in the state legislature come November something practically unheard of nationally.
Darren Perron spoke with Elaine Haney, executive director of Emerge Vermont, about their efforts in this political cycle.
