Darren Martell arrested for the murder of Roberta Martin

ENOSBURGH, Vt. (WCAX) – The man who was named as a person of interest in the Roberta Martin case has officially been arrested and charged with her murder.

Vermont State Police say Darren Martell is now their top suspect in the murder of the 82-year-old Enosburgh woman, who was missing for a week before her body was discovered in a wooded area off Sand Hill Road.

Thursday evening Vermont State Police also arrested him for the aggravated murder of Martin.

Details at this time are limited, as police have not released specifics on the investigation.

Martell has been in jail since Police had previously arrested him on an unrelated lewd and lascivious charge Monday morning after he was spotted masturbating in public. They made the arrest in the Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans after they say Martell ran from police when they first spotted him. Troopers were looking for Martell to question him in connection with the homicide investigation when they found him.

Our cameras were rolling last Thursday as police visited a nearby home and appeared to speak with multiple people. One of those people was Martell, who we got video of as he spoke with police and left the scene.

Martell is expected to be arraigned Friday in St. Albans for aggravated murder, a charge which, if convicted, carries a life sentence in prison without the opportunity for parole.
