MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont farms are tallying up the damage from the flooding earlier this month.
According to a survey from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, there are more than $2.5 million in losses.
So far, 54 farmers responded to the survey and most of the losses are in Chittenden County.
After farms lost more than $16 million during last year’s flooding, some question whether it’s time to shift to higher ground, but farmers say it’s not that simple.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an acre of farmland in Vermont sold for $4,600 last year, a 9.5% increase from 2022.
Experts say it’s the cost that keeps farmers from moving.
The farm damage survey is still available for those impacted.
