MORGAN, Vt. (WCAX) – The small Orleans County town of Morgan was hit hard by flash flooding and washouts Monday night.
“I got up and realized it was roaring outside,” said Maria Cargill, who says she woke up to the sounds of her neighbors yelling for help.
At least five inches of rain had already come down and Cargill says her neighbors were worried about getting out of their house with their six-year-old granddaughter. “They were screaming at us that they couldn’t get out. Luckily, they were able to get off their deck and we were able, my husband and I, were able to help them get out,” Cargill said.”They were able to figure out what they were gonna do and we helped them clean. It was a very busy morning.”
Just across the street from the washed-out house, floodwaters destroyed most of Toad Pond Road. “I woke up, heavy rain, thunder and lightning, started to feel a little uneasy,” said Christina Malanga, who lives at the top of the road and watched as her newly fixed driveway crumbled again. “I noticed that there was what looked like a river coming down my driveway.”
Malanga says the water moved in from the front and back of her house, cutting through the foundation. “We need experts to help us figure this out because three times or four, I feel pretty freaked out whenever I hear rain now,” she said. Malanga called 211 to file a report with the state but is not sure what comes next. “It’s going to be a lot of work. I don’t really know where to begin to be honest.”
This is the second time this area has flooded in the last month and townspeople say this is the worst they’ve ever seen it.
