Vermont man escapes from court-ordered treatment

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Vermont man is on the run after police say he escaped from court-ordered treatment.

We told you last month when Nicolelus Sanborn, 30, of Burlington, tried to flee while he was being transported to the hospital for a medical issue while in the custody of the Vermont Department of Corrections.

He has since been released but has been ordered to receive treatment.

But police say on Monday Sanborn got away from that program.

On the way to a substance use disorder treatment facility, police say Sanborn convinced his chaperone that he needed to stop to pick up clothing from a relative.

When they parked, Sanborn took off toward Burlington and police have not seen him since.

Sanborn was in custody when he was arrested for retail theft and assaulting an officer in Burlington. A charge of felony attempted escape was added when he tried to get away.

Anyone who knows where to find Sanborn is asked to call the police in South Burlington at 802-846-4111.

Editor’s note: In a previous version of this story, we referred to Sanborn as an inmate. That was incorrect and we apologize for the error.
