New York community on the hook for sewer bill from closed prison

MORIAH, N.Y. (WCAX) – An Essex County, New York, community is on the hook to pay for an overdue sewage bill for a former local prison.

Moriah officials say the state’s corrections department has refused to pick up the tab after the town has paid the $105,000 sewer bill since the facility closed two years ago.

Moriah Town Supervisor Matthew Brassard says they will have to cover the payment that was due in April but that it’s not a long-term solution. “New York State paid a good portion of that, that budget, and for them to just out of nowhere — after paying that for two years — just to say we are not paying it anymore –it is a tough pill to swallow,” he said.

The town’s attorney is in talks with the state to see if the cost of future sewer bills can be shared.
