BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Senator Bernie Sanders is inviting young Vermonters to shoot hoops.
Sanders is holding three ‘Basketball with Bernie’ events today in Winooski, Derby, and St. Albans. Participants can take part in a foul shooting contest, and attendees will receive a free basketball.
Sanders — who has played basketball for many years — says the aim is to engage young people. The senator says he’s concerned that they are isolated on their phones and on social media.
“First of all, it’s nice to be on a court with other people. Its fun. Second, it keeps you healthy. Third, for the kids, it develops a sense of teamwork. No good team, not the Boston Celtics, nobody else is going to make it unless people learn to work together,” he said.
This is the latest event Sanders’ has hosted to get young people involved. Others events have included a chess tournament and an essay contest.
Sanders will be in Winooski at 9:30 a.m., Derby at 1 p.m., and in St. Albans at 4 p.m.
