Esther Charlestin wins Democratic Primary for Governor

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Esther Charlestin will take on Governor Phil Scott in November as the Democratic nomination for Vermont’s top job.

With almost three-quarters of the primary vote, she’ll now take on the feat of running against the most popular governor in the country.

Charlestin tells me she hopes to beat Scott the same way she beat her primary opponent, Peter Duval, by grassroots campaigning.

Charlestin will hit the campaign trail after celebrating tonight, spending now until November talking to Vermonters about what a democratic candidate could do for them in the governor’s seat.

She hopes to differentiate herself from Scott through her policy aims and personality.

“My willingness to listen and to hear them, and also my relatability and understanding a lot of what they’re (Vermonters) going through, and their eagerness to want to see change,” said Charlestin.

A poll in April showed Governor Phil Scott holding an 81% approval rating in Vermont, so it will be a tough hill to climb for Charlestin.

The race for Governor will be on the ballot Tuesday November 5th.
