MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont Fish and Wildlife has some reminders about bear hunting regulations ahead of the season that starts next month.
Vermont has two bear hunting seasons. The early season, which requires a special bear tag, kicks off on Sept. 1. The season runs through Nov. 15. But nonresidents with dogs cannot start until Sept. 15. The late season begins Nov. 16 and runs through Nov. 24.
With the bear population trending upward, Fish and Wildlife officials say this year will be a great opportunity for hunters.
Wildlife officials remind hunters that regulations are in place and you can only take one bear during the year. Hunters are asked not to shoot cubs or bears seen in groups.
Successful hunters are required to collect and submit a pre-molar tooth from the bear at the time the bear is reported or within 30 days. The tooth provides the state with important data on the age structure and size of the bear population.
