Funding available to repair New York’s Old Air Force Base

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Senator Chuck Schumer says funding is available to fix New York’s old Air Force base.

This past June, the base was damaged by heavy rain, causing sinkholes and millions of dollars worth of repairs to the area’s old infrastructure.

Plattsburgh’s town supervisor, Michael Cashman says it will likely cost up to $12,000,000 to make the repairs and is calling on the federal government to help cover the costs.

While in Plattsburgh this past week, Senator Schumer pointed to unspent dollars from the infrastructure law as a way to help fund the damage costs.

“I would recommend that the people at the base or anybody, call our office and we can tell you how to apply. The Infrastructure Bill was the biggest infrastructure bill since the 50s, since the federal highway system. Only about a third of it has been spent already, because it takes awhile for people to apply. So, that is what should be done and we will help.”

Cashman also says he would like to see permanent, ongoing funding in the National Defense Authorization Act for old Airforce bases across the country.
