New ‘Long Drop’ program aims to help more Vermonters connect to broadband

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – In an effort to reach people still unable to get affordable broadband, the Vermont Community Broadband Board is proposing a new Long Drop Program to address the issue at a reasonable price. It’s for Vermonters who live more than 400 feet from a fiber line along the road.

The board voted to set aside funding for program. It uses up $2.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds and capital projects, as well as $1.5 million from the Connectivity Initiative.

Our John McMahon spoke with Rob Fish, the deputy director of the Vermont Community Broadband Board, about the vision for the Long Drop Program, who it will help and at what cost. Watch the video to see their full conversation.

The VCBB is in the process of developing the program and plans to issue a request for proposals toward the end of the year. The VCBB welcomes comments on the program. To provide comments or make suggestions, you can email Robert.Fish@Vermont.gov or call 802-522-2617.
