New documentary highlights efforts to expand rural broadband in Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A new documentary about Vermont’s efforts to expand rural broadband hits the big screen this week in Guilford.

“Connected” tells the story of how Vermonters in the Upper Valley came together to bring broadband to more people in the region.

Filmmakers say it shows how local problems, like a lack of internet connectivity, can be solved through teamwork and community.

“I hope that the viewer will take a sense of pride into what has been accomplished in not only simply about getting internet coverage. It’s also a matter of equity for people,” said Chad Ervin of Well Told Films.

The film was made in partnership with Vermont Community Broadband, which said in a statement: “Vermont Community Broadband Board would like to say a big thank you to the hundreds of volunteers across Vermont who came together and spent thousands of hours working to bring broadband to all Vermonters. Because of them, we are well on our way to meeting our goal. Eight out of the ten Communications Union Districts representing 216 towns are currently connecting Vermonters to high-speed internet. Also thank you to Chad Ervin and his team at Well Told Films for telling their story so beautifully.”

You can see the film Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Broad Brook Community Center in Guilford. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.
