New limits on cellphones at Plattsburgh schools

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Schools in Plattsburgh have new limits on cellphones this fall.

At the school district’s middle school, phones must be kept inside students’ lockers throughout the entire day.

High school students have to keep their phones inside their backpacks during class.

Plattsburgh’s school district superintendent says students are still able to contact their families through the main office.

The new rules come as Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers consider crafting a statewide policy.

“I do believe that we need to come up with a uniform policy, how to implement it and make sure we get that distraction out of the classrooms,” said Assemblyman Billy Jones, D-Chateaugay Lake.

Jones says he believes a cellphone policy would likely require legislative action rather than new guidance from the state’s education department.
