Vermont, New York rivers being treated with lampricide

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Some unwanted residents in Lake Champlain are getting an eviction order.

Vermont and New York agencies are working with federal officials to apply lampricide to rivers in both states.

Lampricide keeps the lamprey population at bay in Lake Champlain, where officials say one lamprey can kill the equivalent of 40 pounds of fish per year.

The treatment will be applied to the Winooski and Mississquoi rivers in Vermont and the Boquet River in New York. The treatments start Sept. 24 and will continue into October.

After a river is treated, the Health Department recommends river and lake water not be used for drinking, swimming, fishing or irrigation.

Officials say the treatments are localized and won’t impact most of Lake Champlain.
