Rhode Island man charged in shootout with troopers to remain behind bars

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Rhode Island man charged in connection to an officer-involved shooting back in July will continue to be held without bail.

It started as a chase with police in New Hampshire and spilled over into Vermont, where Brenden Sackal, 30, opened fire on troopers in Burke.

Vermont State Police Sackal fired more than 40 shots from both automatic and semi-automatic weapons. He was shot multiple times.

Sackal appeared in Caledonia County Court earlier this week for a weight of the evidence hearing. He faces 17 charges including attempted aggravated murder.

His next court date has not been scheduled.
