Vt. school supervisory union looking at Pledge of Allegiance policy

SHAFTSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – A Vermont school supervisory union is taking another look at its policies after backlash over the Pledge of Allegiance.

Social media posts have blown up over the last day or so alleging that the pledge was banned at the Shaftsbury Elementary School.

Superintendent James Culkeen says that’s not true. He says in the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, school principals have the power to decide whether the pledge will be recited and it has been an option for several years.

In a statement, Culkeen said, in part: “It is now clear that a consistent practice needs to be developed across our schools, to address all of the various points of view on this matter, while fostering a stronger sense of community among our students. The SVUESD will be undertaking this work for the seven schools under its purview, and encourage the other member districts of the SU to do the same.”
