Dartmouth dedicates stadium in memory of football coach Teevens

HANOVER, N.H. (WCAX) – A dedication ceremony was held Friday at Dartmouth College to honor the life and legacy of football coach Buddy Teevens.

Memorial Field in Hanover will now forever be known as Buddy Teevens Stadium.

“He touched so many people’s lives.,” said Kathryn Munro with Dartmouth College.

Teevens was Dartmouth’s winningest football coach, leading the Big Green to 117 wins over 23 years. But he was also great at breaking new ground by hiring the the first full-time female Division I football coach. Teeven’s died last year after a cycling accident.

“Buddy was a giant and his life and legacy are unparalleled here at Dartmouth. And it is just an honor to align our stadium and that wonderful place with his name in perpetuity and for generations to know the kind of person that he was,” Munro said.

Teevens is also credited with making the game safer for athletes by replacing live tackling in practice with remote-controlled tackling dummies. It’s something NFL commissioner Roger Goodell highlighted during a memorial service in May on the very field that will now bear his name.

Dartmouth is establishing several initiatives in Teevens’ and his wife’s name, including a scholarship for student-athletes and a center for peak performance that will help athletes both on and off the field. “Career development, nutrition, sports medicine, really just helping student elevate to become mentally and physically excellent,” Munro said.

Teevens will be honored Saturday on the stadium’s video board when Dartmouth takes on Penn.
