Firefighters urge importance of smoke detectors to save lives

CADYVILLE, NY. (WCAX) – Fire Prevention Week starts Sunday, this year with a focus on smoke detectors.

Fire stations are making use of the week to educate on fire safety. This year’s theme is “make smoke alarms work for you.”

59 percent of fire deaths occurred in homes with no smoke detector, according to the National Fire Protection Association’s latest report.

A Cadyville firefighter notes that fires today burn faster and hotter than 40 years ago when he started working, making every second count.

“A lot of times, people just don’t think about them. They almost become a secondary thought. You should have smoke alarms in every room of your house, especially in sleeping areas, and make sure that they’re functioning. This is a real good week to just make sure that you take a few minutes, take a walk through your house and test them all,” Chuck Kostyk of the Clinton County Firefighters Association said.

If your smoke alarm goes off for no apparent reason, reach out to emergency services to get it checked.
