Judge allows bail for accused killer in Vermont cold case

HYDE PARK, Vt. (WCAX) – A judge says the accused killer in a 30-year-old Vermont cold case can be released as he awaits trial, but so far, Carroll Peters has not posted the $200,000 bond and remains behind bars.

Peters is accused of killing his estranged wife, Cheryl, in 1993. Cheryl Peters was found dead in her Morrisville home, shot execution-style.

Prosecutors say last month, police took a fresh look at the case and brought them information to charge Carroll Peters with the murder.

During a recent hearing, a judge decided the 70-year-old could be released while he waits for his trial. Despite the decision being a legal loss for the state, the prosecutor says she will continue to push for justice.

“This is a case that is long overdue and I’m looking forward to bringing it to a successful conclusion,” Lamoille County State’s Attorney Aliena Gerhard said.

Peters will remain behind bars unless he posts that $200,000 bail.
