After 15 months, new Montpelier post office opens for business

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – After more than a year, Montpelier finally has a new post office.

Last July’s devastating flooding wiped out the federal building, leaving residents with no post office until now.

The new building, located at 89 Main St. in downtown Montpelier, hosted a grand opening ceremony today.

The space is fully equipped with new mailboxes and lockers for package pickup.

Residents are happy to have a postal center closer to home, after having to commute to Barre for fifteen months.

Middlesex resident Jo Ann Troiano says, “I am very happy. It was a long haul going to Barre twice a week. I go every day now. I was looking forward to being able to get supplies and stamps, because the only place you can get stamps in Montpelier is either Shaw’s or maybe one of the other stores.”

“Well, we live right across the street. So I am a little worried about traffic. But in general, overall, I am very happy to have a post office again,” said Montpelier resident Paul Somerset.

The post office will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It’s closed on Sundays.
