Shortage of IV fluids could force hospitals to postpone procedures

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Amid a nationwide shortage, IV fluids at the UVM Medical Center are in short supply. That could mean some procedures will be rescheduled.

It comes after Hurricane Helene decimated one of the nation’s largest manufacturing facilities for IV fluids.

Hospital officials at UVMMC say they are currently receiving about half of their normal supply.

They say patients who do not require IV fluid during care can expect to receive oral electrolytes for rehydration.

No procedures have been postponed yet as hospital officials monitor the situation.

“We are constantly reevaluating our current supply, our use rate and what we can expect to receive from the outside, and reevaluating that decision as to whether or not we might need to delay certain elective procedures,” said Dr. David Clauss, the chief medical officer at the UVM Medical Center.

The hospital says if you have a procedure scheduled and have not heard from the hospital, you should continue as normal.

The UVM Medical Center is also working with other organizations and the federal government to explore additional supply options.
