WATERBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – Members of the Vermont State Police are helping with hurricane recovery efforts down south.
Last month, Hurricane Helene ripped through the Southeast, causing extensive damage to communities across Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina.
Now, five members of the state police are in Newton, North Carolina, providing security at the community care center with local law enforcement. They’re also helping to provide things like vaccines, showers and essential supplies.
The Vermont team includes Lt. Thomas Mozzer, Sgt. Christian Hunt, Tprs. Clay Knight and Zachary Trocki, and K-9 Loki.
The troopers say they’re honored to assist.
“I’d say it’s very humbling just to come down here and see what everyone is going through… Just being able to offer some assistance from up north and the rest of the country– it’s amazing. It’s absolutely amazing to be involved in this,” Mozzer said.
The troopers say they’re also on standby if local police need help.
They expect to be in North Carolina until the end of the month.
