Vermont city named safest in the country by Wallet Hub

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – South Burlington has been named the safest city in America according to a new study from Wallet Hub.

The report highlights its low-level of uninsured drivers, few pedestrian deaths, and high rate of EMTs and paramedics and also notes the city’s financial safety.

It has the lowest unemployment rate in the country at one point nine percent and low rates of underwater mortgages and personal bankruptcy filings. This means that residents are at a reduced risk of being unable to pay their bills or lose their property.

“Being a safe community takes all of our residents and all of our businesses and all of our professionals to create, so really this is their designation, not just my designation or city government designation,” said South Burlington City Manager Jessie Baker.

Baker also points to the city’s investment in public safety services and shared infrastructure, like parks and sidewalks, over the past decade.

The city is currently working on completing a sidewalk inventory to determine which paths need repairs.
