Group pitches Amtrak Adirondack service fix

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – There’s a new proposal to keep Amtrak’s Adirondack train moving full speed ahead.

Amtrak plans to reduce roughly 20 percent of its service in early November to repair one of the tunnels in New York City. That means fewer trains and longer wait times for those taking the service.

However, the consulting firm AmeriStarRail has a potential solution. Their plan includes delaying construction until at least January and turning the service into just one line that goes from Montreal to Washington D.C.

“The nice thing about by connecting the two lines — the trains together and running as a single train — passengers have a one-seat ride without changing. So, that’s really an exciting benefit of our solution,” said the group’s Scott Spencer, chief operating officer, ameristarraIL:

Amtrak officials did not have a comment on the proposal and instead pointed to the agreement made with New York’s Department of Transportation to preserve 80 percent of the line once construction starts.
