BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Students at the University of Vermont are making it easier to catch the bus on campus.
Members of the Student Government Association held a ribbon cutting today at a campus bus station to celebrate a year-long effort to make them more accessible.
Starting last year, the student government and the UVM Disabled Student Union started a project to add benches at the six highest-traffic bus stops on campus for students who can’t stand for a long time.
“This was one of the first specific changes we advocated for on campus,” said Lillian Olsen, President of UVM/s Disabled Student Union.
“We’re really glad to see this project come to completion. We hope that it’s a stepping stone in that it furthers the university’s address to accessibility needs on campus,” said SGA Senator Sydney Daniels.
Those involved say they hope the newly installed benches not only improve accessibility, but also the quality of life for people who need them by making it easier to wait comfortably for their ride.
