Dover lawmaker makes bid to unseat Vt. House speaker

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont House Speaker Jill Krowinski is facing a challenge to her seat.

Representative Laura Sibilia, I-Dover, says she intends to challenge the Burlington Democrat for the speaker’s gavel in January.

Sibilia serves on the House Committee on the Environment and Energy and the Joint IT Oversight Committee. She says she was motivated to run by this spring’s double-digit education property tax increase which led to 30 school budgets failing.

“Can not sit by for another two years and have that happen — sitting by and tinkering around with the finance system. There’s enough money in the system. It’s too big of a system that has too little accountability,” she said.

Speaker Krowinski in a statement says she plans to run for reelection and is focused on connecting with Vermonters in every county on the issues of education, health care, and housing.

Sibilia needs 76 votes from her House colleagues to unseat Krowinski.
