Pittsford car dealers spar in silly sign showdown

PITTSFORD, Vt. (WCAX) – Two Pittsford vehicle dealerships are pitted in a fierce contest against each other. And the weapons in this war of words are funny signs along Route 7

Megan and Gordon Fox have pushed puns outside their Pittsford Auto Sales business for years. This fall, they put the pedal to the metal to churn out more.

“A lot of people stop by and tell us they like it or put posts on Facebook and enjoy the signs,” Gordon said.

“A lot of people have been saying they look forward to it each week and so that’s been really good,” Megan added.

Enter Scott Lafave, the owner of Brandon RV, who chimed in with his own wordplay at his businesses just a mile down the road.

“Well, they put a sign out that had a cute little quote on it. And I drive by it every day and I thought, how would it be if we responded to it, right? Lafave said. He’s built a kind of trophy wall in his dealership showcasing the signs he’s put up this summer to honor the rivalry. “They’ve said some pretty clever things about RVs, and I love it. I look forward to the challenge and responding, and the community loves it.”

Despite the drama, both owners insist they are friendly and hoping to stir up laughs from the other. “People have questions about if we actually are getting along, right? I’ve had some Jeep owners that I think missed the point of the humor. The actual people selling the Jeeps love it, get it, understand it,” Lafave said.

“People ask us if we’re like seriously fighting, and that’s not the case at all. We’re having a good time with it and we text back and forth and just kind of poking fun at each other,” Megan said.

“In a local community, you can look out for each other. I’m a local boy — graduated high school here in town, live a half-mile from the dealership, and this is home.

Both businesses say they plan to keep the war of words coming, meaning drivers can expect more laughs when they hit the road.
