MORRISONVILLE, NY. (WCAX) – Pumpkins flying at the Clinton County Landfill as part of a waste management company’s Compost Bash.
Casella Waste Systems hosted its first annual Pumpkin Bash, destroying over one hundred and fifty pumpkins.
Besides offering eco-friendly fun, the company was raising awareness for composting as it grows its organic waste programs in New York by partnering with local businesses and organizations.
Unlike Vermont, New York doesn’t have a law requiring residents to compost.
“Composting has to be a community event, and that’s why we’re trying to build awareness. The whole community needs to come together. A lot of people do it in their backyards in a rural county like Clinton County, and that’s a perfectly acceptable way to do it,” Sean Lukas of the Clinton County Landfill said.
It was bring your own pumpkins, or give a monetary or dry food donation for the joint council for economic opportunity, which provides support programs for low-income residents.
After the pumpkins were beaten to the ground with mallets, flung from slingshots or shot from a trebuchet, they would be composted.
