BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders cast his ballot on Tuesday for Vice President Kamala Harris.
At his polling place in Burlington, Sanders called this election the most consequential of our lifetime, with issues like reproductive rights, climate change and income inequality at stake.
The senator said he’s closely watching who will control the U.S. Senate which will determine whether he remains chair of the HELP Committee, if he wins reelection.
Sanders also said he was concerned about former President Trump refusing to accept the results of the election.
“We live in a democracy and the essence of a democracy is these elections sometimes you win and sometimes you lose,” Sanders said. “I’ve lost elections. No one likes to lose. When you get on the phone, you congratulate the winner. You don’t say as Trump is saying today, ‘The only way I can lose is if there’s fraud.’ What does that mean?”
Sanders is seeking a fourth term as a U.S. senator for Vermont. In his reelection bid, he is facing a challenge from Republican businessman Gerald Malloy.
Polls close across Vermont at 7 p.m.
