BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The election process went smoothly here in Vermont according to the secretary of state.
Our Katharine Huntley was in Burlington as ballots were cast and counted. As far as she could see, the race in Burlington was smooth and results were able to be read out quickly.
Burlington saw near-record numbers of voting as 63% of registered voters cast their ballots.
Once the polls closed at 7 p.m., election officials worked to make sure all ballots were in the voting machines. They then quickly were able to have the machine produce a receipt with the unofficial results.
The actual computer in those machines was brought to Burlington City Hall by two people where votes were officially inputted.
The secretary of state says, at this point, this election went smoothly.
“Vermonters were happy to be out doing their civic duty. Happy to be engaged and really thankful for the opportunity to vote. Turnout was strong as we had a number of people new to their communities doing same-day voter registration and plenty more people bringing the ballot that was mailed to them,” said Sarah Copeland Hanzas, D-Vt. Secretary of State.
Once election workers are able to make it through all the write-in ballots by hand, then the clerk’s offices can make their results official.
