HINESBURG, Vt. (WCAX) – Hinesburg voters on Tuesday rejected by a wide margin a ballot measure that would establish a local options tax.
The local option tax is a proposed 1 percent increase in sales taxes that could also apply to meals, alcoholic beverages, and lodging in Hinesburg.
The measure failed by a nearly 72% margin, 2,113 to 828.
The municipality receives 70% of the tax, and the State Payment in Lieu of Tax Program receives 30%. If all four taxes were implemented, it was estimated the town could raise at least $175,000.
