BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Bennington county wrapped up its annual “Socktober” donation drive-with a large haul to assist those less fortunate.
Organizers say the fourth year of the drive was one of their largest, receiving over 3,000 pairs of new socks, hundreds of hats, gloves and other winter clothing items.
All items were donated to Bennington county outreach and homeless programs.
Kelly Carrol said a big push came from local police departments and elementary school students. She said something small, like having fresh socks, can make a massive impact.
“There’s a lot of things a lot of us take for granted,” Carrol said. “Socks are one of those things if you think about some of the homeless when it rains if they go through a puddle there’s snow or something and their feet get wet, they stay wet, and they don’t have an opportunity to go out and use something else, so the little things we take for granted can be big.”
She says the total amount of socks they’ve collected over four years is just under 9,000.
