Officer involved in deadly crash with bicycle put on administrative leave

SHELBURNE, Vt. (WCAX) – Shelburne police say an officer involved in a deadly crash with a bicyclist has been put on administrative leave.

Investigators say Shelburne Police Sgt. Kyle Kapitanski, 41, was on duty and driving his cruiser when he hit a cyclist in South Burlington early Monday morning.

The bicyclist, Sean Hayes, 38, of Burlington, died at the scene.

Tuesday, Shelburne police said Kapitanski has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the crash by the Vermont State Police.

Monday, troopers said it was raining and dark and the road was wet at the time of the crash.

There’s no word yet on whether any charges will be filed.
