NORTH HAVERHILL, N.H. (WCAX) – Grafton County’s going to have a new sheriff in town. Thirty-year-old Jill Myers, an officer from Littleton, won election last week as the county’s top cop. Adam Sullivan spoke with Myers about her plans for the job and her rocky history with the current sheriff.
“Law enforcement really drew me in,” said Jill Meyers, who started her career as a police officer in Littleton. “You get to opportunity to help people not only on their worst days but you get to help them and make a positive impact on their life.”
As sheriff, the mother of three young children says she plans to take a regional approach to policing to improve relationships with departments across the county.
“Just knowing that ‘Hey, if I show up in your town and I respond to a call with you, I already know who you are,’” she said.
Current Grafton County Sheriff Jeff Stiegler did not seek re-election and offered some parting advice. ”Best of luck. It is follow the law, follow an ethical path, and I think you will do just fine,” he said.
But the two have a volatile history. Myers worked for Stiegler in the sheriff’s office for just under two years before resigning abruptly last year in the midst of an administrative dispute. The two have not spoken in a while and there is currently legal action pending initiated by Myers.
“I would not speak with her because she has legal council,” Stiegler said.
When asked about the ongoing litigation, Myers also declined to comment. “At this point, I’m just looking to move forward and make that department the best that it can be,” she said, adding that her perspective will help make it happen. “I think it just shows that younger generations can start doing stuff like that.”
Myers will be officially sworn in as sheriff on January 8th.
