Rutland Winter Market returns after brownfield revitalization

RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) – The Rutland Winter Market is back at its old location at the Vermont Farmers Food Center.

Local officials were trying to upgrade the former industrial site with state and federal funding when they found high levels of carcinogens in the air. Now, after $800,000 in brownfields funding, the center reopened earlier this month to welcome back the Winter Market.

“The Market was able to find other locations in Rutland but all of them were temporary and you had challenges like size and amount of vendors and locations. So, everybody the past couple of weeks since we’ve been here has just been thrilled. Like I said, everyone feels like it’s home. I think our community really has a shared sense of ownership of this space,” said the center’s Heidi Lynch.

The market is open every Saturday and will host a holiday fair in December.
