Resolution to stop arms sale to Israel fails

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont lawmakers made an effort to keep your tax dollars from funding weapons to Israel.

All three resolutions to do so failed.

The vote highlights support for US military assistance to the Israeli government.

Arms sale opposition was started by Senator Sanders amid scrutiny over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Both Vermont senators spoke at the capitol on Wednesday, saying the sales violate international law and use taxpayer money to support an illegal war in Gaza.

“The United States government must obey the law. We must pass these resolutions from a moral perspective. The United States must not provide support to a government which has created one of the worst humanitarian disasters in modern history,” said Sen. Sanders.

“That it would harm our goals for that Jewish democratic state, for the easing of humanitarian suffering, for compliance with international law and the Leahy Law, and for what is the goal that has to be the touchstone of our policy,” said Sen. Welch.

The Sanders-led effort failed on all three resolutions, getting less than 20% of the vote on each one.
