Health providers seeing uptick in respiratory illnesses linked to bacteria

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont health providers are seeing a rise in bacteria that is causing respiratory illnesses.

The Vermont Department of Health put out a health alert Friday on an increase in reported mycoplasma pneumoniae, a bacteria that is a common cause of respiratory illnesses, predominantly in children.

“It’s really when a mycoplasma pneumoniae infection progresses to pneumonia that could cause more severe illness,” said the department’s Laura Ann Nicolai.

Officials say to contact health care providers if symptoms develop and to stay home if sick.
