STOWE, Vt. (WCAX) – In a sign of the season, Route 108 between Stowe and Cambridge — known as the Notch Road — is closing Friday night.
VTrans says the gates will close on both sides at 7 p.m.
It comes after a successful first year of the newly installed chicanes, artificial barriers aimed at preventing large trucks and busses from getting stuck on the narrow route. “Over the past half-decade, we’ve seen the average sort of ramp down, but the chicanes specifically are an innovative solution and we are satisfied with what they are doing so far,” said VTrans’ Todd Sears.
He says only one tour bus got stuck this year back in September. A tractor-trailer snuck by the chicanes in May but was flagged down before it could make it up the mountain.
