Sen. Welch weighs in on President-elect Trump’s attorney general pick

WINOOSKI, Vt. (WCAX) – Following the decision by Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz to drop out of the running for attorney general, President-elect Donald Trump has turned to a familiar face for the job.

Trump announced this week that he’s choosing former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to fill the role. Bondi served as one of Trump’s lawyers during his first impeachment trial, and has been a long outspoken supporter of the president-elect.

Democratic Vermont Senator Peter Welch was in Winooski visiting small businesses on Friday. He questioned whether Bondi would back Trump in his promises on the campaign trail to go after his political opponents.

“That’s a line we can’t cross in this country,” Welch said. “So it’s understandable that whoever the President nominates is going to be a partisan. But it’s essential that that person not only have loyalty to Trump, but loyalty to the constitution.”

Trump’s first pick, Gaetz, stepped aside amid continued fallout over sexual misconduct allegations against him.
