Adirondack Winter Invitational hits the ice in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (WCAX) – College hockey is heading into the Adirondacks this weekend.

Friday was the kickoff of the Adirondack Winter Invitational Tournament in Lake Placid. Four teams will face off on the ice: Providence, Clarkson, the University of Massachusetts Lowell and St. Lawrence University.

It’s the Olympic Regional Development Authority’s second year hosting the event, which coincides with the opening of Whiteface Mountain and the Oval.

The tournament is being held Thanksgiving weekend this year to help neighboring businesses.

“It is really a destination, a lot of people like to do their shopping in Lake Placid, this just gives them another reason to come in here. The hotels are full, we also have a youth hockey tournament in town this weekend. Like I said, the speed skating oval is going to open tomorrow afternoon. So, we have tons of things for people to do and enjoy this beautiful weather,” said Chadd Cassidy, ORDA’s vice president of operations of legacy sites.

All four hockey teams will be in action on Saturday evening. Click here for more details and tickets.
