NH attorney general warns residents of blackmail scam

CONCORD, N.H. (WCAX) – Authorities in New Hampshire are warning residents to beware of an email blackmail scam.

The attorney general’s office says they have gotten reports from several residents about emails that threaten to expose embarrassing information and videos unless the victims pay up.

The emails contained the recipient’s name, telephone number, home address and a picture of their home. They claim a virus was placed on the recipient’s electronic device, allowing the sender to track the victim’s browsing history, emails and social media accounts.

A section of the email says, “I can’t even fathom the humiliation you’ll face when your colleagues, friends, and fam watch it… I will wipe everything clean once you come through with the payment.”

Authorities urge you to never send money to unfamiliar people online.

If you get this email, contact the police, especially if you’ve lost money.

You can also report the scam to the attorney general’s office by calling 888-468-4454, emailing Doj-CPB@doj.nh.gov or visiting the AG’s website.
